Common Core State Standards

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are an updated set of curricular standards that have been developed with the intention of unifying curricula and standards across all 50 states. Schools in California will teach to these standards beginning with the 2014-15 school year. For more information click here EGUSD - Common Core State Standards .

For a summary of the CCSS in a short 3 minute video, please click on the following link CCSS Video .  This video was presented on our morning bulletin for all of our students to see.

Currently, the staff at Franklin High has been participating in professional development provided by the district, site, and outside programs to effectively assist in implementing these new standards.

The following link provides information by grade level for K-8 and for English language arts/literacy and mathematics for 9-12. The guides are provided in English and Spanish courtesy of the National PTA. CCSS Parent Guides

Here'STEM is a unique program that allows students to focus on one of four areas of study: Computer Specialist Computer Specialists incorporate a standards-based/mastery approach that allows students to accelerate learning as they demonstrate mastery of each curricular standard. Engineering Specialist Engineering Specialists complete mastery courses in Computer Assisted Drafting and Engineering. Media Specialist The Media Specialist program prepares students for career paths in the field of media communications behind and/or in front of the camera. Generalist Students interested in all three major areas of STEM can choose the Generalist strand. Mastery of this strand is obtained by completing coursework in the three specialist areas. After completing core introductory classes, students will select one area of study for their mastery coursework. Each specialist area provides the skills necessary to gain employment or to pursue advanced study. Course instruction is enhanced through mentoring and internships.

These four-year pathways in animation, design arts and digital media production allow students the opportunity to learn and participate in all aspects of graphic communications such as 1. animation including editing, camera work, script-writing, story boarding, 2. graphic design using the latest computer software programs and 3. video production, producing and directing using the school’s television studio and industry grade equipment. Students work with high-end technology in a hands-on, fully functional television studio, use industry-standard editing software and have the opportunity to experience how the profession works. After completing core introductory classes, students will select one area of study for their mastery coursework. Students have the choice of going in depth into the art and craft of animation, graphic design or digital media production. Students will receive a high quality education in the digital media fields as well as developing the highly transferable skills of communication, collaboration and problem-solving. When students leave these programs, they are truly prepared for both college and career. Each specialist area provides the skills necessary to gain employment or to pursue advanced study.
